Deep in the heart of Louisiana rice country, in Jefferson Davis Parish, lies the multi-generational farm of Paul Johnson. Here, amidst the sprawling rice fields, Paul sees more than just rows of crops – he sees a testament to human creativity.
“Farming is about so much more than planting and harvesting,” says Paul. “It’s about ingenuity, about constantly finding new ways to nourish our communities.”
Louisiana, boasting the title of the third-largest rice-producing state, is a cornerstone of the American rice industry. Here, tradition and innovation go hand-in-hand. While the state is known for its long and medium grain varieties, Paul is a champion for a more recent addition – Jazzman rice.
Developed by the LSU AgCenter, Jazzman is an aromatic jasmine-type rice known for its fragrant and flavorful qualities.Recognizing the growing demand for such varieties, Paul dedicated a significant portion of his land – 300 acres – to cultivating this unique rice.
This venture wouldn’t have been possible without collaboration. Paul highlights the vital role of local mills like Falcon Rice and Supreme Rice, who partnered with him to commercially produce and promote Jazzman rice.
“There’s a real hunger for aromatic rice varieties,” says Paul. “Thanks to the creativity and teamwork between Louisiana farmers, researchers, and distributors, consumers can enjoy delicious, home-grown Jazzman rice while supporting our local economy. That’s something we’re truly proud of.”
Paul’s dedication extends beyond the fields. Recognized as the 2022 U.S.A. Rice Farmer of the Year, Paul is a steward of the land, implementing practices that benefit both the rice he cultivates and the surrounding wildlife.
Whether it’s nurturing the earth or embracing new rice varieties, Paul Johnson embodies the spirit of Louisiana rice farming – a blend of tradition, innovation, and a deep respect for the land. So next time you savor a bowl of fragrant Jazzman rice, remember the creativity and dedication of Paul Johnson and countless Louisiana rice farmers like him.
